How to Avoid a Motorcycle Crash

Lets just face the facts about the dangers of riding a motorcycle, a motorcycle crash does not happen very often, just about 4 percent of all crashes with vehicles are a motorcycle crash. This is a very low percentage but it does lead to 10 percent of all deaths in traffic. You are just not as protected on a bike as you are when driving a car. Still this extremely high amount of deaths because of a motorcycle crash can be reduced with just a few simple guidelines.

There are a lot of misconceptions about a motorcycle crash

The greatest myth about a motorcycle crash is that they are more often than not caused by other road users like car owners and trucks. This is not at all true, almost 65 percent of the crashes is caused by the rider self and are single vehicle crashes. This means that there was no other vehicle involved in the crash and the riders caused there own accidents. This is really the biggest myth and now you know you also know that there are steps to be made to avoid a motorcycle crash caused by yourself.

Another myth about motorcycle crash is that they almost always happen at night, while in fact more then seventy percent of all motorcycle crashes happened in day time.

A deathly motorcycle crash only happens at high speed is the next myth. 40 miles an hour can be enough to kill you if you do not take the right precautions. Of course when the speed increases the risk of fatality becomes higher but when you have a motorcycle crash at low speed, and most of the accidents happen at low speed, and you do not wear good gear it still can kill you.

Most bike riders are much less cautious when they drive at these speeds because they think they will be able to intervene and to avoid problems. Often they do not see everything that is happening on the road and they react slower then they would be at a higher speed. This results in much more accidents.

Young deaths

It is true for all vehicles that younger people make a third of all crashes and for a motorcycle crash this is not different. What is different is that with a motorcycle crash with young people alcohol is often a very big factor. When drink and drive in a car you put your self in great danger but then you drink and ride a bike you are at much more risk of ending up death. Motorcycle riders are often less aware of their surroundings because of their helmet and have often less of a reaction time to problems on the road then when driving a car. The combination of high speeds, less reaction time and alcohol is a lethal because you are much less protected when you drive a motorcycle then a car.

2)Be aware that the vehicle can be deadly even at low speed, so stay alert.

3)Most of the motorcycle crashes are caused by the rider, so you need to be aware of this fact and ride responsible.

Choosing Your Market

Most writers don’t realize that getting into full-time writing depends mostly on their marketing skills. Yes, there is a secret to marketing. It is in reading multiples of magazines and choosing the right target… in other words – choosing a target that markets the kinds of articles/stories you have to sell.

If, for example, you like to write mysteries, don’t waste your time submitting to Better Homes and Gardens, or Woman’s World. Submit mysteries to a magazine that buys mysteries. You may think that would go without saying, but you’d be surprised how many writers try to sell to the wrong markets, or to magazines they haven’t even read. (NEVER try to sell to a magazine you haven’t read.)

If you want help in finding the right market, arm yourself with the right information. I highly recommend buying the online version at www.writersmarket.com for $39 a year. This is one purchase you really need to make. Invest in yourself. You can also buy it in the hard copy, but the online version is updated daily, whereas the hard copy is updated annually.

Let’s say you want to sell your mystery story. To find good markets for it, log in to Writer’s Market and go through the process of narrowing the fields on the search page. It is pretty self-explanatory.

Ultimately, you will wind up with a list of magazines you have never heard of and probably have not read (but that sound right for your story or article). Select magazines that are at least 75% freelance written. (Writer’s Market will give you that information.) When you have arrived at the best magazine market for your article, make another investment and buy three consecutive (recent) copies of it.

When you receive the copies (four to six weeks later), go to the page that show the names of the editors and staff (in the front), and match up the names of the editors and staff with the names of the articles in the magazine.

When you have identified which articles belong to paid staff and which ones belong to freelance writers, you are on the right trail. Read the articles that are written by freelancers. When you find an article where you think to yourself, “I could write that,” you have found your needle in the haystack. This is the market you want to sell to.

Next, create a folder on the Writer’s Market and label it with the name of the article you have in mind. If, for example, you wrote an article entitled The Mystery of River Run, make a folder (on Writer’s Market) with that name. As you find the names of magazines that you think are good markets for that story, file them in that folder. (Fear not – the Writer’s Market gives easy directions on how to do this.) When you get that far, yer cookin’ with gas!

Now go through the markets one at a time and make notes. After you have read the top two or three magazines that you think would be your best markets, submit your story to the one that pays the highest.

When your story has been accepted and you know when it will be published (or thereabouts), begin the reselling process of the same story by resubmitting it to the next market in line. (Reselling is the key to being a full-time writer, but resales only earn half what you received on your first sale.)

It is absolutely imperative to keep a good set of books that will show when you submitted an article, the name of the article, the magazine you submitted it to, and whether it was accepted or rejected. (Writer’s Market also supplies a place for that.)

And now you know why writing is such hard work. Nevertheless, if it is the real passion in your life, you’ll stick with it. In doing so, you’ll learn more and more tools of the trade.

A Job Out of a Letterhead

I am in my early 20′s. I am young compared to my contemporaries at work. But I would like to be modest this time and share how I made a good impression in my application cover letter. The secret? Simple. A personal letterhead.

Of course it’s not usual that applicants have a personal letterhead. But that’s precisely the point. It’s unusual. And it stands out.

I first got the idea from a friend who works in the Human Resources Department of a prominent multi-national company. She says it’s tiring to go over the cover letters of applicants almost every day, with each letter almost containing the same phrases and the same plea for employment. I don’t think it’s an arrogant comment. It’s just merely being human. When you are flooded with letters every working day, you’d surely want to see something that would give your eyes some kind of a feast.

And so I thought, what would make my cover letter stand out? I have no choice but to place more or less the same content as the other applicants. But what would allow me some space to show off some of my character? Personality is the key, my friend would always say. Your letter would show some degree of your character. And what better way to do that than to place some color and style in my cover letter. Hence, I worked on a personal letterhead.

My template does not contain much really. Just the usual – names, contact details, address, a personal URL to my website slash blog. But I did some minor design work on the letter. A semi-transparent box with the details inside it, and some color (that actually matches the company’s colors, of course). I made it a point not to make it appear too excessive, so the Human Resources Department won’t think of me that way. I made it formal and stylish. And then I wrote my cover letter as followed by my resume.

When I finished writing the letter, I printed out a sample so I could have a gauge of my magnum opus. Of course it’s not much. I just wanted to be someone different. I suppose, everybody wants to meet someone who dares to be different, who has enough courage to stand out without being intimidating. I understood that companies invest a lot on employees who show potential, who exemplifies a certain dynamism that would bring the company forward as times go by. I want to be that person for the company where I was applying for. I did not want a job. I wanted a career.

As so it happened. I submitted my application (in the letterhead, of course) to the company. I waited for a response for a week, then two weeks, then three. I was nearly out of desperation, and I was planning of moving on to the next phase of my job hunting, but at that point, the good news arrived. I got a call from the company asking me to report to their office for an interview. The rest, so they say, is history.

I am now very contented of that small out-of-the-box effort I did in order to stand out in the application process. Looking back, the letterhead did some sort of magic for me, and it upped my confidence a bit as I faced the people in the interview. And true enough, it’s a worthy story to tell. Stand out. Be creative. Be the person they want.
